Wizz Air announces major expansion in Moldova with six new flights, two aircraft in Chisinau
Wizz Air, the fastest-growing airline in Europe, announced today a significant expansion of its operations in the Republic of Moldova. During a press conference, Wizz Air's CEO and co-founder József Váradi and Sergiu Spoială, director of Chisinau International Airport Eugen Doga announced the addition of six new flights, the allocation of two additional aircraft to Chisinau base, and the increase in flight frequencies to nine popular destinations.
The expansion strengthens Wizz Air's position as a leader in air transportation in the Republic of Moldova and highlights the company's commitment to improving the country's connectivity with the rest of Europe. The new destinations to be operated directly from Chisinau include Hamburg, Frankfurt-Hahn, Turin, Nice, Prague and Copenhagen. Flights will be gradually introduced, starting at the end of this year and continuing at the beginning of next year.
Wizz Air will increase the frequency of flights to nine already existing and highly demanded destinations: Brussels, Larnaca, Bologna, Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, Dortmund, Memmingen and Verona. This measure will offer travelers more flexibility and flight options, including daily services on certain routes.
'We are delighted to take an important new step in the Republic of Moldova. The expansion of our operations reflects the confidence we have in this market and addresses the growing demand from passengers. By adding 3 million seats and diversifying our network to 34 routes, we are strengthening our position as the country's number one air carrier. Moreover, we are creating new jobs and economic opportunities, contributing to the development of the local community. We will continue to offer affordable fares and democratize air travel for Moldovan citizens,' said József Váradi.
The announcement was welcomed by the leadership of the Chisinau International Airport 'Eugen Doga,' which reiterated the importance of this strategic partnership.
'Today confirms the direction we have embraced, to bring the Republic of Moldova closer to Europe. The return of Wizz Air's operational base at the end of last year was a crucial step, and the current expansion represents a clear signal of confidence in the growth potential of our market. This partnership fosters healthy competition, which translates into more advantageous prices for passengers. In parallel, we continue with plans to modernize the airport to increase capacity to 6 million passengers annually and to develop a logistics hub in Mărculești,' said Sergiu Spoială.
The two additional aircraft joining the Chisinau base will support both the new routes and the increased frequencies. Alongside this expansion, Wizz Air also announced the launch of a recruitment campaign for cabin crew, opening new employment opportunities in the local market.
Wizz Air is a European ultra-low-cost airline known for its extensive network and commitment to sustainability. The company operates one of the youngest and most efficient fleets in the world in terms of carbon emissions, with a mission to make flights accessible to as many passengers as possible. Through the continuous expansion of its network, Wizz Air connects major cities in Europe and beyond, contributing to the development of tourism and business connections.
