Government spokesperson comments on analysis by economic expert

Government spokesperson Daniel Vodă commented today on an analysis published by economic expert Stas Madan, which contradicts the narratives about a so-called 'economic disaster' in the Republic of Moldova. The official emphasized that statistical data confirms a consistent and significant increase in the number of new enterprises, reflecting the vitality of the business environment.

During 2014–2020, the annual average of new enterprises was 5,972. In 2021–2024, the figure rose to 7,541 per year, which means an increase of 26%. Moreover, the year 2024 registered a decade-high record of 8,742 new enterprises.

When related to the working-age population, the trend is even clearer: in 2014, there were 3.1 new enterprises per 1,000 people, while in 2024 the number increased to 5.6, despite the demographic decline.

'These are aspects that the Government, the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization, as well as government agencies communicate continuously, but it is important for independent experts to also confirm, based on official figures, the economic reality. This dynamic shows that we have a more active and confident business environment, even under complicated external conditions,' said Daniel Vodă.

The government assures that it will continue policies to support entrepreneurship and attract investment, and such statistical data confirms that the Republic of Moldova maintains its course of economic development and resilience.

In a social media post, expert Stas Madan wrote 'one of the narratives intensely propagated for some time, but especially now during the electoral campaign, is about the 'economic disaster' of the recent years. Interestingly, those who talk the most about this disaster are people who were in power in the past. In a recently heard podcast featuring people versed in monitoring the online space and social media, I understood that on TikTok this is one of the trending topics. For instance, if we are in an economic disaster, normally fewer people would want to start a business, right? Now let's see what the statistics of the number of new enterprises created annually, as well as their density relative to the working-age population (15-64 years), looks like for the period 2014-2024.'

'In the period 2014-2020, an average of 5,972 enterprises were registered each year, while in the period 2021-2024, the average annual number of new enterprises created was 7,541, meaning on average 26% more. In 2024, the highest number of the last decade was recorded – 8,742 enterprises. This trend is happening despite the decrease in the working-age population. Thus, if in 2014, on average 3.1 new enterprises were created per one thousand inhabitants aged 15-64, in 2024 this indicator reached 5.6. Conclusions are up to each individual. But it is an interesting and hopeful trend.'
