Former Romanian Economy Minister joins Chişinău Government

Claudiu Năsui said he has accepted the proposal to take over the position of Minister of Economy in the Government of the Republic of Moldova, led by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan. Năsui made the announcement in a public post in which he explains the reasons why he decided to join the government team in Chişinău.

A former Minister of Economy in Romania, Năsui says he resonated with Tofan’s vision of transforming the Republic of Moldova into a country as attractive as possible for entrepreneurs.

According to Năsui, economic development must be based on private property, economic freedom, and free-market principles. He argues that the state should create conditions for generating wealth rather than intervening excessively in the economy.

He notes that the decision to come to Chişinău entails giving up his mandate as a member of the Romanian Parliament and using his experience in a new process of reforming Moldova’s economy.

Năsui says he aims to contribute to continuing the processes of liberalization and privatization, as well as to the reforms needed to bring the Republic of Moldova closer to the European Union.

“I chose to accept Mr. Tofan’s invitation to join the Government of the Republic of Moldova,” Claudiu Năsui wrote.

He believes that a more prosperous Moldovan economy will also contribute to the development of the Romanian economy, in the context of their shared European path.

Claudiu Năsui served as Romania’s Minister of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Tourism between 2020 and 2021 and has been a member of the Romanian Parliament since 2016. He studied economics at Paris-Dauphine University and finance at Bocconi University, worked in the financial sector, including at PwC and BCR, and holds the international CFA certification. After his years of study and experience abroad, he chose to return to Romania and become involved in public life.

He first entered the Romanian Parliament in 2016, and between 2020 and 2021 he was Minister of Economy in the Romanian Government. Over this period, he built a very clear profile: less bureaucracy, more transparency in how the state spends money, more discipline in the public sector and more space for entrepreneurs.

He is the founder of the Open Budget platform, created to increase transparency regarding how public money is spent. He has consistently supported bold reforms, including when they required questioning structures, expenditures or privileges perpetuated over many years.

Also today, President Maia Sandu signed the decree granting Claudiu Năsui citizenship of the Republic of Moldova.
