Parliament convenes in extraordinary session: standing bureau approves agenda of meetings

Parliament will convene in an extraordinary session on 20–26 August 2026. The decision was approved today by the Standing Bureau, at the request of Speaker Igor Grosu. Plenary sittings are scheduled for 24 and 25 August. The draft agenda includes 37 draft normative acts.

According to the Parliament’s Communication and Public Relations Department, of the 37 draft normative acts included on the agenda, 23 bear the EU label and are part of the commitments undertaken in the process of the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the EU. The areas targeted by the harmonization of national legislation with the European Union acquis include social protection, justice, the financial market, environmental protection, infrastructure, mass media, postal communications, and road safety.

In addition to the EU‑labelled drafts, the agenda also includes bills aimed at strengthening the national legislative framework. Among the draft laws to be examined in second reading are the Code on Organization and Functioning of Parliament, amendments to the Electoral Code, the draft law on the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Judgments in Civil or Commercial Matters, as well as initiatives on the digitalization of certain judicial procedures and public participation in the decision‑making process. MPs will also examine the draft law on the procedure for compensating damage caused by unlawful acts committed in criminal and contravention proceedings, as well as the draft law on arbitration.

Between 20 and 25 August, public consultations will take place and parliamentary committees will convene in meetings. Plenary sittings are scheduled for 24 and 25 August. On Monday, 24 August, MPs will meet in a plenary sitting starting at 14:00.

The request to convene the Legislature in an extraordinary session was submitted by Speaker Igor Grosu. The convening of the extraordinary session is prompted by the need to adopt, as a matter of priority, a package of draft normative acts of major importance.

According to the Parliament’s Regulations, when the Legislature is not in ordinary session, it may meet in extraordinary or special sessions at the request of the President of the Republic of Moldova, the Speaker or one third of MPs.
