German Chancellor in Chisinau says doors of European Union open for Moldova, country wanted in EU

Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz has conveyed a strong message of European support in Chisinau, on the occasion of celebrating 34 years of independence of the Republic of Moldova, alongside President of France Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk.

“For me personally, it is a joy and an honor to be here today, in this country, together with our European friends. Today, we celebrate the fact that the people of the Republic of Moldova, for an entire generation, have been living in freedom, prosperity and peace,” said Merz.

The German official emphasized that Moldova's choice for the European path was a historic one.

“We celebrate the fact that this country has decided to take the path of the European Union. It could have happened differently. Every day, the terrible war in Ukraine reminds us how fragile freedom is and how quickly things can change,” warned the Chancellor.

Merz also sent a direct call to Moldovan citizens, in the context of the upcoming elections. “The people in this country feel especially now, one month before the elections, that the vote can be decisive for the fate and future of Moldova,” he stressed.

The Chancellor of Germany delivered two clear messages on behalf European partners:

“The first is that the doors of the European Union are open. You are wholeheartedly welcome in the European family. Moldova is not only geographically, but also historically part of this family.”

He congratulated the Moldovan authorities for their determination in implementing the reforms required by the European pathway.

“The Moldovan government has acted with great determination since the start of its mandate and has made significant steps towards integration into the European Union.”

President of France, Emmanuel Macron, Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz and Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk are making an official visit today, at the invitation of the head of state, Maia Sandu.

The visit takes place on the occasion of Moldova's Independence Day. In the evening, after 20:00 the country's president, alongside high-ranking guests, took the stage on the Great National Assembly Square and addressed the citizens.
