German Chancellor says war in Ukraine must end, but not at cost of Ukraine's surrender

German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz in Chisinau today said that the war of aggression initiated by Russia in Ukraine must end as soon as possible, but not through a surrender of Kyiv, which would give Moscow the chance to prepare for a new conflict.

"This war must end. We want the weapons to be silent in Ukraine and the best time would be today, immediately. But not at any price, because we do not want a surrender of Ukraine. Such a surrender would give Russia time to prepare the next war," said Merz.

He emphasized that the goal of Western partners was to achieve a lasting peace, built on solid security principles.

"We need a just peace, and for this, we are working intensively together with our partners in the United States and Europe. We are doing this for Ukraine, but also for ourselves and, last but not in the least, for the Republic of Moldova," added the German Chancellor.

President of France Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and  Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk are making an official visit today, at the invitation of the head of state, Maia Sandu.

The visit takes place on the occasion of Moldova's Independence Day. In the evening, after 20:00, the country's president, along with the high-ranking guests, took the stage on the Great National Assembly Square and addressed citizens.
