VIDEO // EU conveys emotional message for Republic of Moldova

The European Union has conveyed a congratulatory message to the Republic of Moldova on the occasion of Independence Day, reaffirming its firm support for the country's democratic and European path.

“Today, the Republic of Moldova celebrates its freedom and the right to decide its own future. Independence is not just a memory; it is a constant responsibility of the citizens. The European Union supports a strong, democratic and prosperous Moldova, where young people find opportunities at home and each citizen contributes to a better future. Happy Independence Day, Republic of Moldova!” the official EU message reads.

European Union Ambassador to Moldova Janis Mazeiks delivered an emotional message in Romanian, emphasizing that the Independence of the Republic of Moldova is “not just a legal act, but a moral commitment to dignity and self-determination.”

“Today, we celebrate 34 years since the people of this country gained their right to freedom and chose to break away from a system that denied them their language, identity, religion and future. Independence means the power to decide for yourselves and this power stays as important today as it was 34 years ago,” said the European diplomat.

Mazeiks highlighted the progress of the Republic of Moldova in recent years, including the initiation of accession negotiations with the European Union, justice reforms, and strengthening the rule of law. He also emphasized future challenges, including the next autumn parliamentary elections.

“These elections will determine the path Moldova will follow in the coming years or decades. The future of the country must be decided solely by the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, in a free and transparent way. The European Union is proud to stand with you, supporting the democratic path and European journey,” added the ambassador.

He stressed that EU support is reflected in concrete investments: modern schools, safer roads, resilient energy systems and new opportunities for young people.

“Independence is not just a memory, but a daily responsibility. It belongs to each citizen who works, votes and gets involved. Happy Independence Day, Republic of Moldova!” concluded Janis Mazeiks.

The Republic of Moldova today marks the 34th anniversary of the proclamation of Independence, adopted by the parliament on August 27, 1991.
