Joseph Mark Burkhalter sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to Moldova
Joseph Mark Burkhalter, nominated by United States President Donald Trump to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Moldova, was sworn in this week before U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The announcement was made by the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau in a message posted on its official Facebook page.
“Congratulations to U.S. Ambassador-designate to Moldova Joseph Mark Burkhalter, who was sworn in before Secretary of State Rubio this week. The U.S. Embassy in Moldova looks forward to welcoming Ambassador-designate Burkhalter to Chisinau and working under his leadership, in order to further strengthen the enduring relationship between our two countries,” the embassy said in its message.
Burkhalter was nominated by Donald Trump in June 2026 to serve as the United States Ambassador to Moldova. He had previously been nominated for the position of U.S. ambassador to the Kingdom of Norway.
Joseph Mark Burkhalter has 18 years of experience in Georgia state politics, where he represented an area in northern Fulton County, near Atlanta, in the General Assembly. In the state legislature, he served as Speaker of the House of Representatives and Speaker Pro Tempore.
Alongside his political career, Burkhalter worked in real estate development and served as a senior counsel at Dentons US LLP, where he handled projects related to public policy and economic development. He also served on the boards of the North Fulton Chamber of Commerce and the North Fulton Community Improvement District in Alpharetta, Georgia.
According to the U.S. Embassy, Burkhalter is expected to arrive in Chisinau, where he will lead the American diplomatic mission and, in this capacity, contribute to the development of relations between the United States and Moldova.
