Moldova Security Forum // Defense Minister: War in Ukraine changed Europe’s security environment

The war in Ukraine has changed Europe’s security environment, and its consequences are being felt throughout the region and even beyond it. Minister of Defense Anatolie Nosatîi made the statement at the third edition of Chisinau Security Forum.

According to the minister, although the Republic of Moldova does not have direct access to the sea, the country is part of the wider Black Sea region, and security developments in this area have a direct impact on it.

„The current situation is determined by significant changes that took place after the illegal annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation and the outbreak of the war. The conflict is taking place at the borders of the Republic of Moldova, and its consequences affect the entire region and even go beyond it,” said Anatolie Nosatîi.

The Minister of Defense emphasized that security is indivisible and the changes brought about by the war in Ukraine are affecting the security environment of the entire European continent.

„Security is indivisible. We can clearly see how the security of one country is interconnected with the security of other states. For this reason, relations with our neighbors, as well as cooperation with European institutions, are very important,” the official said.

Anatolie Nosatîi said that the authorities must be prepared, including for difficult scenarios and unpredictable situations. He noted that military planning also takes into account the most unfavorable developments in the security situation.

In this context, the official highlighted the importance of cooperation among the countries of the region and the exchange of views within such forums. Nosatîi specifically mentioned cooperation with Romania and praised his relationship with the Romanian Minister of Defense, whom he described as „a very good friend” and „the most important partner.”

The Minister of Defense argued that such discussions are necessary to identify common solutions and strengthen the security of the Republic of Moldova and the entire region.

The third edition of Moldova Security Forum is taking place today and tomorrow in Chisinau. The event brings together more than 700 participants and approximately 90 experts from 20 countries to discuss the security of the Republic of Moldova, Europe, and the Black Sea region.

The gathering is organized by more than 20 organizations and institutions and is the largest security event held with the support of civil society, public institutions, the business community, and development partners. The forum brings together officials, diplomats, experts, representatives of civil society, academia, companies and media.

The theme of this edition is Strengthening Democratic Resilience and Security through Strategic Vision and Multilateral Cooperation. The program is taking place in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine and the threats affecting the entire region. The experience of the Republic of Moldova in protecting democratic processes and cooperating with European and transatlantic partners will be a central topic of the discussions.

Moldova Security Forum 2026 is organized by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in the Republic of Moldova, the Institute for European Policies and Reforms (IPRE), and the NATO Liaison Office in the Republic of Moldova, with institutional support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Moldova, as well as 20 partner organizations from Europe and the United States.
