Speaker: 167 years since Little Union, first step towards modern Romanian state
Speaker Igor Grosu conveyed a message today on the 167th anniversary of the Little Union, marked on January 24, a historic event through which Moldova and Wallachia chose Alexandru Ioan Cuza as ruler, laying the foundations of the modern Romanian state.
In a post, the official emphasized that the Union of the Principalities in 1859 represented “an act of courage and vision” that opened the path toward political unity, modernization, and the affirmation of a common identity.
According to Igor Grosu, the Little Union demonstrated that solidarity can change the destiny of a people and constituted a key moment in the process of building modern Romania.
“January 24 remains a lesson in unity, dignity, and responsibility toward the future,” he concluded.
The Day of the Union of the Romanian Principalities marks the union of Moldova and Wallachia, achieved on January 24, 1859, through the double election of Alexandru Ioan Cuza as ruler of both principalities. The event is considered the first step toward the formation of a unitary Romanian state, a process symbolically concluded on December 1, 1918, when the Great National Assembly in Alba Iulia decided on the union of Transylvania, Banat, Crișana, and Maramureș with the Kingdom of Romania.
