VIDEO // President of Romania after European Council meeting: Moldova - sovereign state, we respect sovereignty expressed by citizens’ opinion

The Republic of Moldova is a sovereign state, and the opinion of its citizens will be respected by Romania.

President of Romania Nicușor Dan made the statement on 22 January, after the informal European Council meeting held in Brussels.

Bucharest official was asked about the scenario of a union between Romania and Moldova.

“At this moment, the Republic of Moldova is a sovereign state and sovereignty is expressed by the majority opinion of its citizens. The majority opinion of its citizens is that the objective of this state is integration into the European Union. Romania, the big brother, or however you want to call it – with a common cultural and historical identity – supports the objective that the citizens of the Republic of Moldova have chosen. I am optimistic that this will happen. If in the medium or distant future the majority of citizens will have a different opinion, we will act accordingly. For the moment, we respect the sovereignty expressed by the opinion of the citizens,” the head of state said.

President Maia Sandu recently stated that if a referendum were to be held, she would vote for unification with Romania. At the same time, she explained that support for this option is not widespread within the political class, which is why European integration remains the only realistic solution for protecting the sovereignty and survival of the Republic of Moldova, in the context of regional and global developments.
