President appoints new acting Prime Minister: Eugeniu Osmochescu to lead Government until new cabinet formed
President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu today signed a decree appointing Eugeniu Osmochescu as acting prime minister. He will perform the duties of head of government starting on 8 July 2026, until a new Cabinet is formed.
According to the presidential decree, Eugeniu Osmochescu, deputy prime minister and minister of Economic Development and Digitalization, has been designated to serve as acting prime minister. The decision was taken in accordance with the provisions of Article 101 paragraphs (2) and (3), as well as Article 103 paragraph (2) of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova and Article 23 of the Law on the Government.
Under the legislation, Eugeniu Osmochescu will ensure the leadership of the Government during the transition period, after former prime minister Alexandru Munteanu announced his resignation. This week, the head of state is to hold consultations with parliamentary factions to nominate a candidate for the office of prime minister. Subsequently, the designated candidate must present to Parliament the governing program and the list of the future Cabinet of Ministers in order to obtain a vote of confidence. Recently, the Party of Socialists and the National Alternative Movement Party announced that they will not participate in the consultations.
At the end of last week, prime minister Alexandru Munteanu announced that he was leaving office, after eight months in the position. According to the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, when the prime minister resigns, the entire Government resigns. At the same time, the supreme law provides that, in the event of the prime minister’s resignation, the outgoing Cabinet only performs the functions of managing public affairs until the members of a new Government are sworn in.
