President: Congratulations, Romania! Congratulations, Nicușor Dan!
After verifying over 98% of the reports, President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu conveyed a congratulatory message to independent candidate Nicușor Dan, who is winning the presidential elections, as well as to Moldovans with Romanian citizenship who participated in the election.
"Congratulations, Romania! Congratulations, Nicușor Dan! Romania, we confidently walk together on the European path! The Republic of Moldova and Romania rely on each other – in good times and in bad. Dear Moldovans with Romanian citizenship at home and around the world, you have once again raised a strong voice for freedom and democracy! I thank you all for the impressive participation in the elections. The whole world sees what power we have when we are united!", says the President's message.
According to provisional results at midnight, 5,968,417 Romanian citizens or 53.99% voted for Nicușor Dan. His opponent, the leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), George Simion, received 5,086,305 votes or 46.01%. The voter turnout was 11,641,866 or 64.72%.
Moldovans with Romanian citizenship demonstrated unprecedented mobilization in the runoff presidential election in Romania. Over the three days of voting, more than 158,000 people expressed their option at polling stations in our country. This figure is a record and significantly exceeds the one recorded in the first round of the Romanian presidential elections, held two weeks ago, when about 91,000 Moldovans with Romanian citizenship voted over three days.
