Foreign Minister receives new U.S. Ambassador: We want to further strengthen and develop partnership

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi received today new Ambassador of the United States of America to the Republic of Moldova Joseph Mark Burkhalter. They discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation and energy security.

Mihai Popșoi said that the Republic of Moldova wants to deepen its partnership with the United States and thanked Washington for the support provided over the years.

“We have a solid partnership with the United States, which we want to further strengthen and develop. I expressed my gratitude for the support provided by the United States over the years, which helps us strengthen our country’s security and resilience and better prepare to manage challenges,” Mihai Popșoi wrote in a post.

A separate topic of discussion was energy security. The minister mentioned Strășeni–Gutinaș high-voltage power line, financed by the United States, as one of the concrete projects of cooperation between the two countries.

“Strășeni–Gutinaș power line, financed by the United States, is a concrete example of Moldovan-American cooperation and an important project for strengthening the energy independence of the Republic of Moldova,” he emphasized.

Mihai Popșoi assured Joseph Mark Burkhalter of the authorities in Chișinău’s openness to bilateral cooperation and wished him success in carrying out his mandate.

Joseph Mark Burkhalter was nominated as Ambassador of the United States of America to the Republic of Moldova by President Donald Trump in June 2026 and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in August 2026. On September 28, 2026, he presented copies of his credentials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and on September 30, 2026, he officially presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu.

The Republic of Moldova and the United States established diplomatic relations on February 18, 1992.
