Students of Moldovan State University to benefit from 52 modernized laboratories, lecture halls with World Bank's support

The State University of Moldova (USM) will start the new academic year with 52 fully modernized laboratories and lecture halls, carried out under the project, Higher Education in Moldova, financed by the World Bank. The total investment value amounts to over 150 million lei.

The capital reconstruction of USM's Dormitory No. 2 is also funded with the same funds, with works expected to be completed by the end of this academic year.

‘’In the new academic year, we will open 52 fully modernized laboratories and lecture halls. Besides upgrading the infrastructure, professors had the opportunity to train in academic centers across Europe, including Romania, and the university has developed new study programmes adapted to current standards. The main goal of this project is to offer students quality European conditions and programs here at home, at the State University of Moldova,’’ USM Rector Igor Sarov said.

The modernization projects are not only focused on physical infrastructure, but also on development of human resources.

‘’We care about the university’s infrastructure, but human resources stay essential. For this reason, the subprojects are not limited to modernizationp of spaces —they also include curriculum updates, establishing modern educational standards, and the continuous training of teaching staff to efficiently use state-of-the-art equipment. We are happy to announce that more important initiatives will come next, made possible by the sustained efforts of Moldova’s government and the Ministry of Education, which have managed to attract additional financial resources for the continued modernization of higher education of the country,’’ said  State Secretary at the Ministry of Education Adriana Cazacu.

President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Sergiu Harea, emphasized the impact of this project on society.

‘’We have managed to change the perception of young people and parents towards the higher education system of Moldova. We promoted the idea that real opportunities for quality studies can exist at home as well.’’

The World Bank representative reaffirmed the institution's commitment to supporting education in Moldova.

‘’We are deeply proud of this partnership. We have invested and continue to invest in general and higher education. To date, we have allocated over 80 million dollars for the modernization of higher education of the country.’’

The project, Higher Education in Moldova, with a total value of over 35 million euros, is implemented by Moldova’s Ministry of Education and Research and  financed by the World Bank during the period 2020-2025.
