Citizens to be able to apply for identity card as of 2 April
The Public Services Agency (ASP) announces that in connection with the transition to the technological process of issuing the new ID card, applications for identity cards will not be accepted on 31 March and 1 April 2025.
As of 2 April 2025, citizens will be able to apply for identity card at ASP's multifunctional centers.
"Temporary identity cards will be issued to citizens who urgently need an identity document for internal use. Provisional identity cards have the same legal value as an identity card. Citizens who wish to obtain an identity card are encouraged to schedule their visit to the ASP multifunctional centers in advance. Appointments can be made online on the ASP website - www.asp.gov.md", ASP said.
The working hours of the multifunctional centers (for citizens) are Monday-Friday from 08:00 to 16:30, with no lunch breaks.
The identity documents will have a new format and increased security level. The first one million documents will be issued for free, with a processing time of 20 working days. The government has approved the models and mechanism for the issuance of identity cards, which will replace the current ID cards.
It will be the size of a bank card and will contain both printed and electronic data. It will not include information on the holder's domicile and temporary residence, which will eliminate the need to replace the card every time the holder changes the place of residence.
It will include an electronic signature. Thus, holders will be able to authenticate in information systems and sign documents, applications or official statements without visiting public institutions.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean urged citizens to apply for identity cards, as they will offer manys benefits.
"This is a project that will greatly facilitate the lives of our citizens in the Republic of Moldova and the diaspora. The identity card will be a tool with a digital signature and will allow us to sign documents from home, without going to public institutions," he said.
Identity cards will be issued to Moldovan citizens from the age of 14, but at the request of a legal representative, the document may be issued before this age.
Citizens who hold a valid identity card are not required to get a new one. Identity cards remain valid until their expiration.
"The identity card is the document we will travel with in EU countries when we become part of the larger European family," Recean said.
