First biosphere reserve of Moldova to be set up in Lower Prut meadow
Chisinau, 18 January /MOLDPRES/ – The Lower Prut reserve biosphere will be created in Cahul for "conservation of geographical spaces, terrestrial and aquatic elements and physical and geographical formations of national and international importance which include plants and animals indigenous only to this territory," according to the draft decision of the Parliament, approved at the meeting of the Government today.
The reserve will cover an area of 14,771 hectares and include nine localities in Cahul, including 824 hectares of forest land. The Lower Prut reserve biosphere will be subordinated to the central authority for the environment through "Moldsilva" and will be funded from the state budget, special means, ecological funds, and donations, including the foreign ones.
The creation of the cross-border reserve is in the trilateral draft project of Romania – Ukraine – Moldova. The preventive acceptance of UNESCO for Reserve founding was given at the meeting of the 4th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves, which was held in Lima, Peru in 2015.
The founding of the first Lower Prut reserve biosphere is supported by the European Union through the European Neighbourhood and Partnership and will allow Moldova to raise its international image, referred the Environment Ministry.
The project will be reviewed and approved by Parliament.
