General Prosecutor's Office: Vladimir Plahotniuc not consented to extradition to Moldova

Vladimir Plahotniuc, detained last week in Greece has not consented to extradition to the Republic of Moldova. The General Prosecutor's Office made the statement today, under data sent by Athens Court of Appeal.

The comment was provided following information that appeared in the public space regarding Vladimir Plahotniuc's alleged agreement for extradition to the Republic of Moldova.

“Athens Court of Appeal, the competent court in examining the extradition procedure informed our country's General Prosecutor's Office that he has not consented to extradition to the Republic of Moldova. The General Prosecutor's Office will provide additional information on the progress of the extradition request, submitted on 24 July,” announced the institution.

Former democrat leader Vladimir Plahotniuc was detained on 22 July by Greek authorities at Athens International Airport, shortly before boarding a flight to Dubai. Alongside him, former deputy Constantin Țuțu was also detained.

The General Prosecutor's Office has sent the Greek authorities the extradition request for Vladimir Plahotniuc. He is under criminal investigation in the Republic of Moldova for committing serious offenses, including creating and leading a criminal organization, large-scale fraud, and money laundering.

A set of documents belonging to Vladimir Plahotniuc and Constantin Țuțu were seized following body searches conducted at the airport and their residence in Greece. The documents had different identities, and some belonged to the same state.
