PHOTO, VIDEO // Security structures in Ukraine and Moldova dismantled Russian group preparing assassinations: group leader and accomplices arrested
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), together with the National Investigation Inspectorate of the Republic of Moldova have foiled a Russian group that was preparing a series of assassinations in Ukraine. The operation, codenamed “Enigma 2.0”, targeted journalists, activists, Ukrainian representatives and military personnel, MOLDPRES reports with reference to UNIAN.
According to the relevant authorities in Ukraine, the leader of the group, a 34‑year‑old repeat offender from Moldova was arrested together with two agents and accomplices of Ukraine.
The suspects were preparing either the assassination of targeted individuals or the detonation of their cars, and were to receive rewards of up to 100,000 dollars for each killing, depending on the victim’s status.
The group infiltrated Ukraine posing as tourists and monitored potential targets by taking photos and videos, marking the locations on digital maps. Funds for preparing the attacks were transferred via crypto wallets and international bank cards.
The purpose of the operation was to create panic and destabilize the socio‑political situation in Ukraine.
Following searches carried out in both countries, authorities seized firearms, ammunition, grenades and communications equipment.
The suspects face life imprisonment and confiscation of their assets.
