The construction of the first road bridge across the Prut River since the fall of communism, symbolically named the Flowers Bridge of Ungheni, starts today.
According to the authorities, starting from the autumn of 2026, it will be possible to travel across this bridge, with provisional off-ramps connecting to nearby roads till completion of the Union Highway in 2029-2030.
The Flowers Bridge across the Prut at Ungheni will be 261.20 m long, featuring two lanes in each direction and sidewalks. The bridge will also include parking facilities for large vehicles, cars and enclosed spaces for thorough inspections of cars and trucks.
The Prut Bridge at Ungheni is part of the Union Highway A8 project. It will have a border crossing point, interconnecting road infrastructures between both countries. It is about the Targu Mures – Iasi – Ungheni – state border Highway (in Romania) and the R1 National Road Chisinau – Ungheni – border with Romania (in Moldova).
The contract’s duration is 24 months, with six months allocated for design and 18 months for execution. The funding source consists of non-reimbursable European funds, amounting to over 151.68 million Romanian lei, excluding value added tax (VAT), through the Connecting Europe Facility.
