Alegeri parlamentare 2025

Moldovan president gives address to citizens

President Maia Sandu, has warned, in a public message addressed to the citizens, that the country's independence and European path were ''in danger,'' because of the  Russian interference with the parliamentary elections. Maia Sandu calls for mobilization on election day and urges citizens to vote ‘’honestly, with a clear mind.

In her speech, Sandu accuses the Kremlin of spending ‘’hundreds of millions of euros’’ to buy ‘’hundreds of thousands of votes,’’ both on the Dniester's banks and outside the country and using disinformation and provocations, in order to intimidate the population. The Moldovan president said that ‘’dozens of lies’’ flood the public space daily and paid individuals were ready to incite disorder and violence.

‘’You entrusted me with the responsibility to be the guarantor of the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Moldova. Today, I tell you with utmost seriousness that our sovereignty, independence, integrity and European future are in danger.

The Kremlin is spending hundreds of millions of euros to buy hundreds of thousands of votes on both banks of the Dniester, as well as outside the country. People are daily intoxicated with dozens of lies. Hundreds of individuals are paid, in order to incite disorder, violence and scare people.

I address all citizens: let's not allow the country to be handed over to foreign interests,’’ said Maia Sandu.

The head of state warned about the consequences of any potential takeover of control over Moldova: stopping European funds, travel restrictions, destabilization of the Transnistrian region and turning the national territory into an ‘’infiltration ramp’’. Sandu emphasized that these plans are ‘’openly’’ spoken about by external actors, and Moldova must not be ‘’handed over to foreign interests.’’

‘’If Russia gains control over Moldova, the consequences will be direct and dangerous for our country and the entire region. All Moldovans will suffer, regardless of whom they voted for.

Europe will end at Moldova's border. European funds will stop at the Prut. Freedom of movement could end. Our land could become a ramp for infiltration towards the Odessa region. The Transnistrian region would be destabilized. These are their plans, and they state them openly.

We, the people of Moldova, cannot allow peace, citizens’ safety and regional stability to be endangered. We must keep Moldova peaceful, out of war, and out of Russia's efforts to attack or destabilize other states,’’ the president said.

The head of state stressed that Russia acted with accomplices in Moldova, individuals who have sold the country in the past and now want a weak Moldova and corrupt justice that doesn't hold them accountable for corruption or treason. Maia Sandu issued a direct call to citizens: not to allow the ‘’handover of the country’’ for money and not to permit the return of corrupt governments that, in her opinion, have sold national interests.

‘’The Kremlin believes that we are all for sale. That we are too small to resist. That we are not a country, but a territory.

But Moldova is our home. And our home is not for sale. Our home stands on our dignified people - you are the wall on which the peace and future of our children rest.

Our forebears sometimes paid with their lives to defend Moldova. Today, we must defend it with honest votes, with clear minds,’’ said the president.

In conclusion, the president called for unity and dignity:

‘’The danger is great, but our strength must be greater. Let's be worthy of our Moldova! Let's not sell it to thieves and do not allow others to sell it! On Sunday, let's show everyone that Moldova is not a piece of land to be bought or sold for 3 pieces of silver, but our sacred home,’’ concluded Maia Sandu.

The president's address was broadcast live by public radio and television stations.

On September 28, the citizens of Moldova are called to the polls to elect a new parliament. Some experts draw attention to Russia's active involvement in the electoral process, using disinformation campaigns, propaganda, and, according to some investigations, even attempts to buy votes. In these conditions, the stakes of the election are not only internal, related to the competition between domestic political parties, but also geopolitical, concerning maintaining Moldova on the European path or, conversely, returning it to the sphere of influence of the Russian Federation.
