Ministry of Internal Affairs announces preparation for extradition of Vlad Plahotniuc from Greece
Vladimir Plahotniuc is expected to be brought to the Republic of Moldova on 25 September 2025. Minister of Internal Affairs Daniela Misail-Nichitin made the statement after today's cabinet meeting. She mentioned that all necessary documents have been submitted.
“He will be brought to Moldova in the shortest time possible. A request and extradition démarche have been sent via Interpol. The police have prepared an extradition plan, and all possible options are being analyzed. The date of September 25 is preliminary. Flight ticket reservations are being made for the team that will accompany him. Once we have all the data, we will provide further information,” Nichitin emphasized.
No details regarding the flight or exact transfer method have been provided yet, but the minister mentioned that the extradition is in an advanced stage of preparation.
Once he arrives in the country, Plahotniuc is expected to be taken over by prosecutors and subsequently placed in prison.
In late August, Athens Court of Appeal accepted the Moldovan authorities' requests for Plahotniuc's extradition. Today his lawyer, Lucian Rogac, announced that the Greek Ministry of Justice has approved the extradition of the former democratic leader.
Plahotniuc was detained on July 22 in Athens, along with former democrat Constantin Țuțu. He is accused in several criminal cases, including the creation and leadership of a criminal organization, fraud and money laundering.
