Moldovan interior minister says traffic safety stays challenge, urges to drive responsibly
The traffic safety continues to be a serious problem in Moldova. Interior Minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin has made statements to this effect in an interview given with MOLDPRES.
According to the cited source, in the first six months of 2025, almost 1,000 traffic accidents were recorded, resulting in 77 deaths and 1,108 injured individuals.
"The main causes remain inappropriate speed, failure to give priority to pedestrians and other vehicles, reckless driving, improper turns, and of course, driving under the influence of alcohol or fatigue," said the interior minister.
According to her, police checks have recently become more effective, with the number of drivers detected under the influence of alcohol increasing by 15 per cent. At the same time, the number of accidents caused by drunk drivers have decreased by almost 30 per cent, and the number of people killed or injured in such cases has dropped by over 33 per cent.
"The safety of each of us depends on the decisions we make at the wheel. Drive carefully, observe speed limits and do not drive under the influence of alcohol or when you are tired," Misail-Nichitin stressed.
According to official statistics, in 2024, approximately 1,900 traffic accidents occurred on national and urban roads, resulting in 220 deaths and over 2,000 injured individuals. The most frequent causes were excessive speed, improper pedestrian crossing and driving under the influence of alcohol.
