Government spokesman on detention in Romania of former deputy head of SIS

Moldovan authorities will closely monitor and cooperate with the Romanian side on the case of the detention in Romania of a former deputy head of the Intelligence and Security Service. Government spokesman Daniel Vodă made the statement today. He said "all efforts will be made so that those who betray the interests of the Republic of Moldova are held accountable according to our country's legislation."

"From the Government of the Republic of Moldova, the message is clear and decisive. Any act of betrayal of the homeland and the transmission of secrets is an issue that requires proper legal classification. I cannot speak on behalf of other institutions that will need to investigate the details of this case, which they certainly will, but I want to highlight that we will continue efforts to identify such individuals who sabotage and work in the interest of other states and not that of the Republic of Moldova. It is a clear ongoing process, and in the future, we will make every effort so that those who betray the interests of the Republic of Moldova are held accountable according to our country's legislation," stated Daniel Vodă.

He mentioned that this high-profile case is not only resonant for the Republic of Moldova or Romania but also regionally and is being watched by the leadership of the Republic of Moldova, including the prime minister, and all actions that need to be taken will be conducted, including on the investigation side in the Republic of Moldova.

"This case demonstrates once again the international cooperation of specialized services aimed at protecting national interests, exposing such situations, and having a former leader of such an institution involved in this absolutely undesirable situation shows that this cooperation effort must continue and yields results in the medium and long term," declared Daniel Vodă.

He added that "the Intelligence and Security Service closely cooperates with the partners who are currently examining this issue." "The case is managed by the Romanian side. This means that the authorities of the Republic of Moldova, in their official capacity, will need to cooperate very closely with colleagues in Romania so as not to jeopardize the investigation. At this stage, these are the details I can share. We carefully monitor and work in favor of protecting the interests of the Republic of Moldova and our citizens. This international cooperation shows results and indicates that we need to investigate in detail and cleanse from people who unfortunately betrayed the country's interests," concluded Daniel Vodă.

Earlier this week, a former deputy director of the Intelligence and Security Service (SIS) of the Republic of Moldova, aged 47, was detained at the airport in Timișoara, investigated for treason by transferring state secret information.
