Moldova, Romania launch MigraMI project, to reduce risks associated with illegal migration
Moldova and Romania are launching the MigraMI - Migrants Management Enhance Initiative project, which represents an important step in modernizing migration management and strengthening cross-border cooperation between the two states. The initiative will contribute to creating a safe environment for citizens through more efficient control processes and reducing the risks associated with illegal migration.
In this respect, representatives of the General Inspectorate of the Border Police (IGPF) participated, on November 19–21, 2025, in Iasi, Romania, in the official opening and the first Steering Committee of the MigraMI project, financed through the Interreg VI-A NEXT Romania – Moldova 2021–2027 Programme.
The events brought together implementation teams from the Iasi Territorial Border Policer Inspectorate (ITPF) – project leader, IGPF – Partner 1, and the General Inspectorate for Migration – Partner 2, along with representatives of the Romanian Interior ministry’s (MAI) structures. The official launch of the project provided a framework for presenting the common goals as regards the combating of the illegal migration, strengthening cross-border cooperation and developing a modern system for managing migrant flows.
During the Steering Committee, held at the ITPF Iasi headquarters, they discussed the organization of mixed working teams, the activity calendar, coordination mechanisms between partners, the procurement plan, as well as the development of a joint action plan for the effective management of migration.
The total budget of the project is 657 thousand euros, of which 90 per cent represents external non-reimbursable funding and 10 per cent is the partners’ own contribution.
By participating in the project, the Border Police of Moldova strengthens its operational capacities and contributes to the implementation of coordinated and efficient procedures at the common border, aimed at reducing irregular migration and ensuring safer, faster and more user-friendly checks for verified individuals.
