Moldova simplifies stay rules for EU citizens, their families
The parliament of Moldova today adopted, in the second reading, the draft law regulating the free movement and residence of European Union citizens and their family members. The legislative initiative was supported by 64 lawmakers. The parliamentary opposition boycotted the plenary session.
According to the draft, EU citizens and their family members, including spouses, children and other dependents, will benefit from extended rights of residence, work, studies and access to social and medical services on equal terms with Moldovan citizens.
To stay in the country for more than 90 days, they will need to apply for a residence card, which will be issued by the General Inspectorate for Migration. The procedure is described as simplified, fast and transparent, and the document will be issued within three working days, with a validity term of five years.
The legislative text also regulates the conditions of eligibility for permanent residence after a legal and continuous period of at least five years, as well as cases where access to the country may be restricted for reasons related to national security, public order or public health.
