Moldovan children to easier receive maintenance allowance from parents abroad

The process of getting maintenance allowance from abroad will become simpler. The parliament has approved, in two readings, a draft law on Moldova's accession to the 2007 Hague Convention on the International Recovery of Child Support and Other Forms of Family Maintenance and the Protocol on the Applicable Law to Maintenance Obligations.

The document, unveiled by MP Ina Coseru, will allow court decisions issued in  Moldova concerning maintenance allowances to be more easily recognized and enforced in the 52 signatory states of the Convention. The documents will be managed by the Ministry of Justice, which will communicate with foreign authorities and may designate competent custodial authorities to act on behalf of creditors.

According to official data, about 50,000 children are subject to enforcement proceedings for the collection of maintenance allowances, and over 16 per cent of families with children have at least one member living abroad.

The cited source noted that accession to the Convention would reduce legal and administrative barriers in collecting international maintenance allowances, providing more effective protection for children and families from the Diaspora.
