Moldovan driving licenses can be converted in Italy without additional exams starting from November 8
The new version of the Agreement between the governments of Moldova and Italy on the mutual recognition and conversion of driving licenses came into effect on November 8. This document brings significant changes for Moldovan citizens residing in Italy.
According to the new provisions, all driving licenses issued in Moldova can be converted in Italy, including the ones got after 2020. At the same time, the period in which holders can apply for license conversion has been extended from 4 to 6 years from the date of establishing residence in Italy.
To benefit from the conversion, the Moldovan driving license must be valid and have been obtained before establishing residence in Italy. Applications are submitted to the Ufficio di Motorizzazione Civile or through authorized driving schools, according to the procedures set out by Italian legislation.
The agreement facilitates the integration of Moldovan citizens in Italy and eliminates the need for taking a new driving test, representing an important step in bilateral cooperation between the two states.
Moldova has similar agreements with Latvia, Spain, the United Kingdom, Greece, Israel, Turkey, Albania and Lithuania. An agreement with France has been initialed and is set to come into effect and there is a Joint Declaration of Intent between Moldova and Germany on the matter.
