Moldovan parliament to join national afforestation campaign

Parliament will join the national afforestation campaign. Speaker Igor Grosu has encouraged deputies to participate in the planting event.

He urged MPs, as well as citizens from across the country, to participate in the sapling planting on March 15.

“Dear colleagues and citizens from across the country, let's lend a hand to the foresters on March 15, align with the campaign launched by the Ministry of Environment, and plant saplings. In addition to the 30 hectares of forest to be planted in Geamăna, this spring's campaign has an ambitious goal: expanding and rehabilitating 3,500 hectares of forest nationwide by planting over 8 million saplings. This initiative is an important step towards increasing forested areas and strengthening environmental protection efforts. Those who cannot make it this weekend can do so throughout the month,” said Grosu.

According to the Ministry of Environment, this spring, the Republic of Moldova will reforest 3,500 hectares of land by planting over eight million saplings. Additionally, by 2025, it is planned to plant at least 7,000 hectares of forest, similar to the goals set for 2024.

On March 15, more than 30 hectares of forest will be planted in Geamăna, Anenii Noi. Moreover, more than 120 locations across the country will be available for planting.

The authorities announce that over the next ten years, forested areas will be expanded by approximately 150,000 hectares, both on new lands and on heavily degraded forest lands, public property, or, for the first time, on private property. These provisions are included in the National Program for the Expansion and Rehabilitation of Forests 2023-2032, proposed and initiated by President Maia Sandu.

Currently, the reforestation rate in the Republic of Moldova is only 11%, while the European Union average exceeds 35%.
