Pupils of Moldova may have online classes on February 18 over adverse weather
The Education and Research Ministry (MEC) has announced that, in the context of yellow and orange warnings for snowfall and sleet, district education authorities, along with level II local public authorities, may independently decide to hold classes online on February 18, 2026.
According to the cited source, each authority’s decision will be made based on local conditions, taking into account the distance pupils and teachers must travel to school, the condition of the roads, the capacity of snow removal services, the area’s terrain, and the situation of pupils who are transported over distances larger than ten kilometers.
The Ministry recommends adopting all necessary measures to protect and ensure the safety of pupils and school staff and emphasizes that parents and the school community must be informed in time about any changes in the organization of the educational process.
MEC notes that it will issue additional recommendations, if weather conditions change.
According to the State Hydrometeorological Service, during the period from February 17, 14:00 to February 18, 20:00, heavy snowfall and stronger winds, with speeds of up to 15–20 m/s, are forecast across the country. As a result, blizzard conditions are expected, with snowdrifts forming and visibility decreasing significantly. Ice will form on the roads, and sleet and glaze ice will also be expected in some areas.
