Over 500 refugee children from Ukraine learn Romanian for free in schools of Moldova

Seven educational institutions in the Republic of Moldova are offering free Romanian language courses for refugee children from Ukraine. Over 500 students benefit from these educational activities, which aim to facilitate their linguistic and educational integration.

According to the Ministry of Education and Research, the courses are being organized for the second consecutive year in five schools in the municipality of Chișinău: "Anton Chekhov" Theoretical Lyceum, "Nicolai Gogol" Theoretical Lyceum, "Mihail Lomonosov" Theoretical Lyceum, "Taras Shevchenko" Gymnasium and "Gloria" Theoretical Lyceum with Sports Profile. Lessons are also held at "Alexandr Pushkin" Theoretical Lyceum in the town of Anenii Noi and at "Dmitri Mavrodi" Theoretical Lyceum in the municipality of Comrat, where a large number of refugee students are enrolled.

The activities take place twice a week, each lesson lasting 90 minutes. Groups consist of approximately 20 students and are organized according to their level of Romanian language proficiency, in order to ensure a learning process adapted to each participant.

The results of the second year of program implementation were presented during a meeting organized by the Charity Center for Refugees, attended by representatives of the Ministry of Education and Research, UNHCR, UNICEF, school managers, and teaching staff.

Participants highlighted the positive impact of the courses on the development of Romanian language communication skills and on preparing students for the national exams in the 9th and 12th grades.

Present at the event, Ivan Duminica, head of the Interethnic Relations Policy Service within the Ministry of Education and Research, emphasized that such initiatives support the integration of refugee children into the national education system and ensure equal access to education.

The program is implemented by the Charity Center for Refugees, with the support of UNHCR, the General Directorate for Education, Youth and Sports of the municipality of Chișinău, and the Ministry of Education and Research.
