WEATHER UPDATE // Orange code for heavy precipitation, strong winds in south of Moldova

The State Hydrometeorological Service (SHS) today updated the Orange and Yellow Weather Warning for the entire country, valid from February 17, 13:40, until February 18, 20:00. Authorities advise citizens to be cautious and follow safety measures.

Thus, an Orange Code has been issued for the south and south-east of the country. In these areas, heavy precipitation is expected, mainly in the form of snow, with estimated accumulations between 20 and 35 l/m².

For the central region and part of the east of the country, a Yellow Code is in force. Meteorologists forecast significant snowfall, with amounts between 7 and 19 l/m². Specialists further warn that, over large areas, the north-west wind will blow in gusts of up to 15–18 m/s. Due to the strengthening wind, snowdrifts will form, snow will be blown and visibility will be reduced. Black ice may form on roads, and localized sleet deposits are also possible.

Recommendations for the population and drivers

Avoid non-essential travel during blizzards and heavy snowfall.

If you are driving, adjust your speed to road conditions and keep a safe distance between vehicles.

Make sure vehicles are properly equipped for the cold season. Vulnerable people are advised to stay indoors and avoid prolonged exposure to cold.

The State Hydrometeorological Service announces that it will continuously monitor the evolution of weather phenomena, and warnings and maps will be updated according to the intensity and extent of precipitation and wind.
