Speaker provided details on nomination process for Prime Minister candidate

Speaker, PAS leader Igor Grosu today provided details on nominating a candidate for the position of Prime Minister and the timeline for the next steps. The statements were made after consultations conducted by President Maia Sandu.

“We had a discussion with the President and proposed the candidacy from the Action and Solidarity Party Faction - Alexandru Munteanu. We discussed the schedule of upcoming events. In a few minutes, the President will sign the decree regarding the nomination of the candidate, and the actual process will begin, in which the designated candidate will present the government program and initiate public and parliamentary consultations with interested parties,” stated Grosu.

The Speaker emphasized that the future Prime Minister's government program will largely be based on the PAS government program, the European integration plan, and the National Development Plan.

“Overall, the government program is ready. However, additional discussions and exchanges of opinions remain, to consult with other interested parties who may have proposals regarding the cabinet composition and ministerial portfolios. We want to have a functional government in a very short time, to realize the budgetary rectification, and to set in motion the mechanisms related to the implementation of the budget law by the end of the year,” added Igor Grosu.

Regarding the candidate’s profile, Igor Grosu explained:

“We initially discussed internal candidacies, within the party, to establish our expectations regarding the next Prime Minister. Two major objectives underpin the selection: accelerating the European integration process by 2028 and economic development through attracting investments and creating jobs. The designated candidate is a person with experience in the field, who has attracted investments, managed complex projects, and knows the business and investment environment well.”

Consultations began yesterday at the Presidency, with the participation of representatives from the “Democracy at Home” Political Party, “Our Party” Political Party, “Alternative” Political Block, Communist Party, and Socialist Party of the Republic of Moldova. None of these parties proposed a candidate for the position of Prime Minister.

After the rounds of discussions, the President is expected to nominate the candidate for the position of Prime Minister, who, according to the Constitution, will have 15 days to seek Parliament’s vote of confidence on the activity program and the composition of the new Cabinet of Ministers.

Until the investment of a new Executive, the Government led by Dorin Recean remains in office, with limited competencies.
