Former leader of Moldovan Democratic Party gets another 30 days of arrest

The former leader of the Moldovan Democratic Party (PDM), Vladimir Plahotniuc, has received another 30 days of arrest. The decision was announced today by Magistrates of the Chisinau Court, Buiucani branch, issued a decision to this end today. Plahotniuc did not participate in the court session.

The arrest warrant was extended at a request by prosecutors, citing the risk of evading the fulfillment of court decisions.

“The request was submitted as part of the case sent to court in his absence, concerning an episode of the case generically called, The Bank Fraud,” said the Anti-corruption Prosecutor’s Office (PA).

Also today, the judicial investigation started, with 28 court sessions scheduled.

The former PDM leader left Moldova in June 2019. He was detained In Greece on July 22, 2025, and extradited to Chisinau on September 25. At the airport, Vladimir Plahotniuc was taken by special authorities to Penitentiary No. 13, where prosecutors informed him of the charges in the pending cases. The former leader of the Democrats was internationally wanted, being accused of creating and leading a criminal organization, fraud on a particularly large scale and money laundering in   particularly large amounts.
