Acting Deputy Prime Minister presented review of ministry's activities

Deputy Prime Minister, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi held a press conference today, and reviewed the main achievements and initiatives promoted since taking office, highlighting the strengthening of international relations, the expansion of the diplomatic network, and support for Moldovans of diaspora.

“The Republic of Moldova has more friends today than ever before. It is a respected state firmly committed to European integration. I would like to thank President Maia Sandu, colleagues from the Government, the Parliament, and the MAE team for their collaboration and professionalism. Each contributed to the success of Moldovan diplomacy,” Mihai Popșoi said.

The minister emphasized that one of the main pillars of his mandate was the extension of the diplomatic presence of the Republic of Moldova.

“We have taken concrete steps to bring our country closer to international partners and to support our citizens, no matter where they are. Major achievements include the opening of the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Astana, a strategic step to strengthen relations with Kazakhstan and the Central Asian region; the opening of Consulates General in Chicago and Sacramento, providing fast and efficient consular services for Moldovan communities in the United States; the change of status of the Consulate in Padua to a Consulate General, strengthening cooperation with Italy and facilitating the diaspora's access to quality consular services; the inauguration of the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in India, to promote economic and cultural exchanges; the inauguration of the Embassy of Israel in Chisinau and the planning for the opening of the Irish Embassy by the end of 2025; the opening of the Embassy Office of the Kingdom of Norway and the Embassy of Spain in Chisinau, strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation in fields such as the economy, culture, and security,” the diplomat said.

Regarding the strengthening of international relations, Mihai Popșoi mentioned:

“Another central objective of my mandate was the signing of bilateral and multilateral treaties that protect citizens' rights, facilitate mobility, and strengthen international cooperation. In total, I have facilitated the conclusion of 59 bilateral treaties and 67 multilateral treaties, covering areas such as social protection, security, trade, education, and the environment. We have also initiated negotiations for another 24 bilateral treaties and 27 multilateral treaties, showing Moldova's continuous commitment to aligning with international standards,” he said.

Agreements signed during his mandate include: six treaties on social protection with Italy, France, Switzerland, and Latvia; eight treaties on the conversion of driving licenses with the UK, France, Spain, Italy, Israel, and Latvia; the agreement on visa regime abolition with the United Arab Emirates, effective as of September 4, 2025; treaties on the exchange and protection of classified information with Lithuania and Azerbaijan; the Defense and Security Partnership with the United Kingdom, signed in Chisinau on November 20, 2024; and the Security and Defense Partnership with the European Union, signed in Brussels on May 21, 2024.

Also, due to diplomatic efforts, the Republic of Moldova will benefit from $130 million from the US Government for the construction of Strășeni-Gutinaș power line.

“These agreements are essential pillars for promoting national interests and protecting our citizens, wherever they are,” concluded Mihai Popșoi.

Mihai Popșoi has served as the head of the MAE since January 2024.
