Moldovan Defence Ministry says to continue investments in defence, security

We have built a modern army and will continue investments in defense and security. Defence Minister Anatolie Nosatii has made statements to this effect at a news conference.

In his speech, the minister summarized the projects carried out in recent years, emphasizing the importance of modernizing the National Army and preparing and protecting the airspace.

“First of all, I want to thank the media representatives for being with us during the mandate, for covering the work of the National Army, helping us to combat disinformation, and most importantly, for contributing to maintaining calm and confidence in society,” the minister said.

The official subsequently unveiled the achievements in military training and infrastructure’s modernization: increasing the number of national and international exercises, training reservists, investing in accommodation conditions and equipping with advanced technology.

Anatolie Nosatii noted an increased participation of citizens in training and exercises.

“We have increased the number of practical activities, organized over 20 exercises in which citizens willing to train also participated - a sign that the attractiveness of these activities has been enhanced. I thank those who came and learned to defend their country,” the minister noted.

The social problems of the military remain a priority: salaries, social packages and working conditions were emphasized as essential directions. The minister thanked the government for supporting legislative projects that have improved the social package of the people in the army.

Referring to critical security equipment, the official provided details about an airspace monitoring radar project.

“The project continues - the radar will be delivered within the established timeline. We have started training the staff who will operate it; they went to the manufacturing country for training. We estimate that the radar will be operational in the first half of 2026. It is a much more advanced system, which will enhance our monitoring capabilities,” Nosatii said.

The minister also emphasized the concern for countering the threat posed by drones.

“Drones are increasingly used and can be dangerous. We have approved the legislation regarding airspace defense, which requires us to develop monitoring and interception means. We will make every effort to ensure that citizens are not in danger - we will take measures to neutralize dangerous drones,” the minister added.

As for the new military strategy, the defense chief said that the document consolidated the directions of transformation of the armed forces.

“The military strategy is a continuity of other national strategies and has as its main objective the transformation and modernization of the National Army: creating a modern, interoperable army, capable of fulfilling its mission of defense, deterrence and assistance in crisis situations,” said Anatolie Nosatii.

In conclusion, the official reaffirmed the willingness for dialogue regarding the continuity of ongoing projects, stressing that decisions regarding whether or not to remain in office will be made following political discussions:

“There are many projects underway - I would like to see them completed. I had discussions with the party's proposal regarding the candidacy for the prime minister's position; it is up to the party and the candidate to decide. When the decision is made, we will discuss specifically,”

Anatolie Nosatii was appointed Minister of Defense of Moldova on August 6, 2021, in the government led by Natalia Gavrilita. Subsequently, he continued his mandate in the government led by Dorin Recean.
