Travelers crossing border with Romania via Costesti checkpoint subject to new Schengen Area entry requirements

Travelers crossing the border with Romania via the Costesti border checkpoint are subject, starting from today, to new Schengen Area entry requirements, according to the Entry/Exit System (EES) implemented at the European Union's external borders.

The system is operational as of October 12, allowing the collection of alphanumeric and biometric data - facial image and four fingerprints at the first entry. It electronically records the date and place of entry and exit information. Under the new system, passport stamping will gradually be phased out and the duration of stay will be monitored electronically.

The Border Police have clarified that Moldovan citizens, as nationals of a third country, are targeted by these new measures and crossing the border into the EU is carried out in accordance with the new EES procedures.

Border police officers at the Costesti checkpoint provide support to travelers, answer questions and distribute informative leaflets, in order to facilitate understanding of the new rules and ensure quick and efficient transit.

The EES applies only to third-country nationals who are short-term visitors - up to 90 days in any 180-day period, on the territory of the European Union. In the context, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said that the visa-free regime for Moldovan citizens stayed unchanged.

Upon the first entry after the system’s activation, biometric data will be collected; for subsequent travels, verification will be automatic, reducing waiting times. Exceptions to the procedure include children under 12, individuals for whom fingerprint collection is impossible and holders of residence permits or long-term visas issued by an EU member state.

Authorities have announced that European countries using the EES will gradually introduce the system at their external borders, with full implementation planned by April 10, 2026. On the transition period, passports will continue to be manually stamped.
