VIDEO // Mayor of central Moldova settlement fined for electoral agitation

The mayor of a settlement from the central Ialoveni district today was fined for electoral agitation, after he urged residents to vote for a political party at the parliamentary elections.

According to the General Police Inspectorate (IGP), electoral agitation on election day is illegal and punishable.

"The police documented a case in which the mayor of a locality in Ialoveni district urged residents to vote for a political party in the election race. He was fined for electoral agitation," the IGP said.

According to the Electoral Code, electoral agitation is strictly prohibited on election day and the day before. On this period, candidates in the elections are not allowed to appear on television or radio programmes. Moreover, local public administration and advertising broadcasters are obliged to remove electoral advertising materials. The ban does not apply to information already placed on the Internet. At the same time, electoral contenders cannot make transfers to or from the account marked, Electoral Fund.

Continuing electoral agitation on the concerned days by the media, electoral contestants and citizens represents an administrative offense and is punishable by a fine of up to 3,000 lei for private people and up to 7,500 lei for legal entities.
