Warning before Epiphany in Moldova: Border Police say swimming prohibited in Prut, Dniester rivers

Citizens are warned that swimming in the Prut and Dniester rivers is prohibited, except in recreational areas attached to water basins specifically designated for rest and bathing. The warning is issued in the context of the Epiphany holiday, when people traditionally bathe in the cold waters of rivers and lakes.

The Border Police point out that the Prut and Dniester rivers are located in the border area, which is subject to a special protection regime.

"These rivers also have strong currents and unpredictable conditions, especially in winter. It is important to choose safe and approved locations for traditional Epiphany bathing, which meet all legal requirements and safety measures. At the same time, make sure you are properly informed about the available alternatives, in order to celebrate this tradition in a safe way. Low temperatures and cold water can endanger people’s health and lives," the border authority said.

On January 19, Old-style Orthodox Christians celebrate the Baptism of the Savior in the waters of the Jordan River by Saint John the Baptist. On the eve and on the day of Epiphany, priests bless water, which is considered healing and protective. It is also customary to bathe in cold water, as a symbol of purification.
