Jewish Community of Moldova has new Chief Rabbi

Rabbi Menahem Mendel Axelrod was officially sworn in as Chief Rabbi of the Republic of Moldova during a ceremony held at the Chabad Synagogue in Chișinău. The position had been vacant for 12 years.

The event was attended by rabbinical leaders from Israel and other countries, representatives of public authorities and the diplomatic corps, members of Jewish organizations, as well as representatives of the community.

According to the Agency for Interethnic Relations, the appointment of a Chief Rabbi represents an important moment for the religious and community life of Jews in the Republic of Moldova and for the preservation of their traditions and identity.

The Agency stated that the activity of the new Chief Rabbi could contribute to strengthening interfaith and intercultural dialogue, as well as promoting mutual respect among communities in the Republic of Moldova.

Rabbi Menahem Mendel Axelrod will hold the position after a 12-year period during which the post of Chief Rabbi of the Republic of Moldova remained vacant.
