Moldova increased renewable energy capacity by nearly 94 MW in first half of year

The Republic of Moldova increased its renewable electricity generation capacity by 93.90 MW in the first half of 2026, reaching a total installed capacity of 1,074.74 MW.

According to the National Center for Sustainable Energy, photovoltaic energy remains the main technology used in renewable energy production. At the end of June, photovoltaic capacities totaled 793.38 MW, the equivalent of 74% of the total. Wind energy accounted for 256.22 MW, or 24%, while biogas installations had a capacity of 8.39 MW and hydropower installations 16.75 MW.

Prosumers – households and other consumers who generate energy for their own use and can feed surplus into the grid – also play an increasingly important role. At the end of June, there were 9,927 prosumers registered in the Republic of Moldova. Of these, 5,051 used the net metering mechanism, while 4,876 used the net billing mechanism.

The installed capacity owned by prosumers reached 220.40 MW, representing approximately 21% of the total renewable electricity generation capacity.

Data from the CNED show that state support mechanisms contributed to the installation of 470.90 MW, which represents 44% of the total E-SER capacity. Another 603.85 MW, or 56%, belongs to producers who sell electricity on the free market.

Authorities estimate that the expansion of renewable energy generation capacities contributes to diversifying the energy mix and strengthening the energy security of the Republic of Moldova.
