Discover Moldova with #MOLDPRES // “Grotto of Wishes” at Tipova, labyrinth hidden in rock on Dniester Riverbank
A true underground labyrinth filled with history and mystery lies hidden in the ancient cliffs of the Tipova cave complex, one of the most spectacular monastic ensembles carved in stone on the banks of the Dniester. Inside the so‑called “Grotto of Wishes,” there is an underground gallery of approximately two kilometers, which tradition and research describe as a space of retreat, shelter and contemplation over the centuries.
According to Elena Cojocari, Deputy Director for Cultural and Educational Projects at the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History, this complex bears the traces of more civilizations and historical eras, being a space where nature and human intervention have intertwined in a unique way.
“In this complex of cave monasteries, the imprint of more civilizations over millennia has been preserved. Located on the bank of the Dniester, this stone wall, shaped by nature, served both as protection against bad weather and as a place of defense against invaders,” Elena Cojocari told MOLDPRES.
She emphasized that the area had had continuous habitation and spiritual use, from ancient communities to monastic life.
“Here, there was a Geto‑Dacian sanctuary, confirmed by archaeological traces, including evidence of ritual fires and later the complex was used by monks seeking peace, communion with nature and closeness to God,” the specialist added.
Inside the “Grotto of Wishes”, the underground gallery, today partially blocked by rock collapses, also preserves traces of underground springs, described by locals as “lakes”, which are said to have offered shelter in times of hardship.
“Stone, water and sunlight, especially during solstice periods, create a special, almost mystical atmosphere here. It is a place that offers tranquility, energy and an opportunity for reflection, where visitors can rediscover themselves and connect to the energies of nature and of their ancestors,” underlined Elena Cojocari.
The Tipova cave monastery is one of the most impressive monastic ensembles carved in rock of Moldova, located on the right bank of the Dniester, near the village of Tipova, about 100 km far from Chisinau. The complex is considered one of the largest of its kind in the country and in Eastern Europe, being set in a limestone cliff approximately 90 meters high, overlooking the Dniester gorge.
The ensemble includes more cave churches, cells, galleries and tunnels carved into the rock, arranged on multiple levels and connected by stairways and corridors. Some of these spaces are dated between the 11th and 18th centuries, indicating long and continuous use of the site.
A distinctive feature of Tipova is its spectacular integration into the natural landscape: access is via stairways carved into the stone and nearby there are the Răușor waterfalls, which make the ensemble one of the most picturesque places on the Dniester riverbank. At present, the monastery remains an important tourist, cultural and spiritual destination, attracting visitors through its unique combination of history, nature and rock‑hewn architecture.
