Government proposes measures to prepare for next cold season
The authorities will implement a series of measures to prepare for the next cold season, aimed at ensuring stable energy supplies throughout the country and protecting consumers. The actions are included in the Plan of measures for preparing for 2026–2027 heating season, which was approved by the government today.
The document was developed by the Ministry of Energy and contains 52 measures. In the electricity sector, the plan provides for the commercial operation of the 400 kV Vulcănești–Chișinău overhead power line. At the same time, the authorities will take available measures to increase the commercial electricity transmission capacity at Romania–Republic of Moldova border.
The responsible authorities will also continuously monitor risk scenarios concerning the security of the Republic of Moldova’s electricity supply, ensure the operational availability of 110 kV overhead power lines, and take the necessary organizational and technical measures to use them, when necessary, to supply the Republic of Moldova with electricity from Romania’s National Power System.
Regarding the natural gas supply, the authorities plan to purchase gas from multiple sources and ensure its transportation through various supply routes.
The plan also provides for monitoring commercial stocks of petroleum products needed to cover domestic consumption.
Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu said at the Government meeting that the winter plan is necessary to manage risks to the Republic of Moldova’s energy security, as the country remains dependent on imports of natural gas and petroleum products.
According to the minister, the 2026–2027 heating season will take place amid a complicated regional and international context, marked by volatile energy resource prices, risks affecting logistics and supply routes, as well as the continuing effects of the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine on regional energy infrastructure.
Since 2022, the Ministry of Energy has prepared the annual Plan of measures for preparing for the heating season as part of the National Strategy for reducing vulnerabilities in the energy sector.
