New Economy Minister optimistic about country’s financial situation

New Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization Claudiu Năsui says that the Republic of Moldova has significant economic potential and multiple advantages, and that difficult decisions made today can create the conditions for development and a better life in the future.

The remarks were made after the first government meeting attended by the new minister, Claudiu Năsui, following his appointment to office.


“This is my first government meeting in the Republic of Moldova. Things are different—and different for the better in many respects. You should know that you have a much more digitalized country with many advantages and a great deal of potential. Part of what I want to do is make the most of this potential,” Claudiu Năsui said.


The official particularly highlighted the progress made by the Republic of Moldova in digitalization, noting that the country has experiences and solutions from which even other states can learn.


“When it comes to digitalization, I believe I have more to learn here than to introduce something new. The Republic of Moldova is very advanced in digitalization, and what I want is to maintain this lead and continue on the path the country is already on,” the Economy Minister said.


At the same time, Claudiu Năsui said that his ministerial agenda would focus on improving the efficiency of the public sector, reducing waste, and modernizing the economy. Particular attention will be paid to state-owned companies and the way they are managed.


“The areas where I would have the most priorities are state-owned companies, reducing waste, and modernizing the economy, especially by attracting new, genuine investments—private investments, not necessarily public ones,” Năsui explained.


The new minister maintains that reducing public spending must remain a government priority, including by identifying areas in which the Ministry of Economy can help reduce the deficit.


“What I have seen so far in the Tofan government is a strong focus on spending, especially on reducing expenditure. I believe this must continue. I have looked more closely at matters concerning the Ministry of Economy. If there are areas where we can help reduce the deficit, I assure you that we will do so. This is something I sincerely believe in. I do not believe in a large state that does everything. I believe in a smaller state that does fewer things, but does them well,” Claudiu Năsui said.


At the same time, the new Economy Minister said that today’s reforms and difficult decisions should lay the foundation for a more efficient economy and a higher standard of living in the years ahead.


“The financial situation is not an easy one. With a relatively large deficit and borrowing mainly in the short term, you have to make some difficult choices. And I believe the Tofan government is here to make these choices so they will not have to be made in the future. Today’s difficult choices mean a better life in the future. If we do not make them now, things will be more difficult for us later. That is why our political responsibility is to make the difficult choices now, so that things will be better in the future,” Claudiu Năsui concluded.


Claudiu Năsui took the oath of office as Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization at the end of last week, and today attended the first government meeting since taking over the mandate.
