Israel's Agriculture Minister fascinated by Moldova's potential
The official visit to Moldova by Avi Dichter, Israel's Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, has turned into a real journey into the country's agricultural, viticultural and traditional universe. In just a few days this week, the Israeli official transitioned from research laboratories in Balti to plantations of fruits and grapes plantations in Negureni and Costesti, from the secular tradition of Barza Albă cognacs to the unique underground galleries of Cricova.
Impressed by the modernization of orchards, the technologies applied in viticulture and the patience and continuity with which Moldova builds its traditions in producing noble beverages, Avi Dichter spoke with admiration about each stage of his experience. ‘’It is a small country but with huge potential. Moldova proves that tradition and innovation can go hand in hand, creating internationally competitive products,’’ the Israeli minister said.
Thus, his visit was not just a diplomatic one, but also a confirmation that Moldova has something to show and offer on external markets – whether we are talking about seed research, modern and certified orchards, quality grapes exported overseas, or wines and cognacs that tell a centuries-old story.
Seed Research in Balti – 'Moldova Has Real Agricultural Potential'
In Balti, Avi Dichter visited the branch of the National Seed Research and Production Center, where he was presented with Moldovan varieties and hybrids, as well as ongoing projects. Particular emphasis was placed on the construction of a modern refrigerator with controlled conditions, meant to conserve the genetic fund and maintain the viability of superior-grade seeds.
‘’Seeds’ preservation is the key to a secure agricultural future. Moldova has real potential here, which can be harnessed through technology and international cooperation,’’ Dichter emphasized.
The Tradition of Moldovan Cognacs – 'An Investment in the Future and Patience'
At the Barza Albă company from Balti, the Israeli official discovered the history of Moldovan cognacs. The minister remarked on the value of patience in production, in front of the collections of matured distillates kept for decades.
‘’Producing a cognac matured for 50 years means investing in the future with confidence and continuity. This is a lesson about patience and traditions,’’ the minister highlighted.
The hosts announced the launch of a 60-year-old cognac, Stefan cel Mare, in next October, the oldest in the company's collection.
The Orchard in Negureni – 'A Modern and Well-Maintained Example'
In the village of Negureni, the minister met farmer Nicolae Pascal, who manages 500 hectares of agricultural land, 100 hectares of which are multi-annual orchards with modern irrigation and hail protection systems.
‘’This orchard is very modern and well-maintained. I am pleased to learn that the irrigation systems come from Israel – it's proof of the practical partnership between our countries,’’ Dichter said.
The farmer also presented the 'Drapeau Marchand' crown formation system for cherries, which allows harvesting up to 400 kg/day from a single tree.
The Vedrașco Brothers’ Grapes – 'A Benchmark for Moldova's Exports'
At the table grapes plantation in Costesti (Ialoveni), the Vedrașco brothers showed the minister 50 hectares cultivated in the pergola system, where they produce 2,000 tons of high-quality grapes annually.
‘’The fact that you have managed to export to the USA and other demanding markets shows that Moldova can become a regional agricultural benchmark. I invite you to visit Israel for exchanges on harvesting and selection technologies,’’ Avi Dichter noted.
Cricova – 'An Absolutely Impressive Experience'
The visit ended at the famous Cricova cellars, where the Israeli minister toured a part of the 120 km network of underground galleries and discovered the collection of 1.3 million bottles of rare wines.
‘’The experience at Cricova was absolutely impressive. It is more than just wine – it is history, tradition, and art,’’ concluded Avi Dichter.
The Israeli official’s visit highlighted the strengths of Moldova's agriculture and food industry: from research and innovation to traditions and competitive exports. At the same time, the minister's statements confirm the openness for cooperation between Moldova and Israel in areas ranging from irrigation and agricultural technologies to exploiting the oenological heritage.
