More medical services for population: mandatory health insurance funds to be increased by 167.4 million lei

The Cabinet of Ministers approved an increase of 167.4 million lei in the Mandatory Health Insurance Funds (FAOAM) for 2026, both in revenues and expenditures. The additional funds will expand public access to medical services and cover additional needs in primary healthcare, hospital care, rehabilitation, dialysis, radiotherapy, and palliative care.

The largest share of the additional funds – 157 million lei – will be directed toward hospital medical services. These funds will allow for an increase in the volume of acute cases treated and the financing of important medical programs and services for patients, including cataract surgery and cardiac surgery interventions.

Day surgery services, treatment for chronic geriatric cases, and general and specialized rehabilitation services – including cardiac, neurological, orthopedic, and pediatric rehabilitation – will also be covered, along with dialysis and radiotherapy sessions.

Another 6 million lei will be allocated to expand access to palliative care, including hospice care, for patients with chronic diseases in advanced stages.

Funding will also be increased for medical services provided to beneficiaries of temporary protection in the Republic of Moldova. A total of 2.9 million lei will be allocated to primary healthcare, while 1.5 million lei will be allocated to emergency pre-hospital medical care.

The increase in FAOAM revenues is mainly determined by higher receipts from fixed mandatory health insurance premiums, which will be 90.2 million lei higher than initially planned. This increase is due to the larger number of people who paid the insurance premium in the current year – more than 154,000 people, 9,000 more than projected.

Other sources contributing to the 71.5 million lei increase in FAOAM revenues include voluntary donations from external sources, additional receipts from the single tax paid by residents of information technology parks, and payments from independent entrepreneurs.
