Romanian Ambassador says Vulcanesti-Chisinau overhead power line 90 per cent complete, electricity from Romania to soon reach right bank of Prut river
The Vulcanesti-Chisinau independence energy line is 90 per cent complete, and residents of Moldova might soon receive electricity from Romania. Romanian Ambassador to Moldova Cristian-Leon Turcanu has made statements to this effect on his Facebook page.
The ambassador noted that, through the high-voltage line Vulcanesti-Chisinau, electricity from Romania would reach the right side of the Prut River directly and without risks up to Chisinau. " The Vulcanesti-Chisinau overhead power line (OPL) is 90 per cent complete and will allow direct connection with OPL Isaccea-Vulcanesti and thereby with the European electricity network," said Cristian-Leon Turcanu.
The construction works for OPL Vulcanesti-Chisinau started in April 2024 and are part of the Power System Development Project, financed by the World Bank Group. Its value is 61 million euros, of which about 27 million euros is for the construction of the line.
OPL Vulcanesti–Chisinau, with a length of 157 km, will include over 500 pylons and 1,500 km of conductors across the three phases, creating a strategic link between the south and center of the country. The project crosses eight districts and 35 localities. Depending on the power system regime, the line will be able to ensure the transit of up to 630 MVA of power, which could meet the needs of 50 per cent of energy consumption during peak demand periods.
The construction of the Vulcanesti-Chisinau power line is a project of strategic importance for the energy security of the country. The new power line will allow the transport of electricity from Romania or other European markets to Chisinau without passing through the Moldovan power plant located in the Transnistrian region.
