Selectia Institute harvested record amount of seed material
Chisinau, 27 October /MOLDPRES/- Selectia Field Crops Research Institute in Balti has produced about four times as much seed material this year as in previous years.
According to the institution, this increase is due to the favorable climatic conditions of the 2021 agricultural season, as well as the expansion of the agricultural land area by 1,200 hectares.
Out of the about six hundred tons of seeds obtained this year, the Institute has in stock near 200 tons of winter wheat of the varieties "Meleag", "Fenix", "Talisman" and "Vestitor", which can be purchased by agricultural producers. The institute also has 150-170 tons of soybean seeds, which will be sold in the spring of next year, 120-130 tons of peas, as well as certain quantities of spring barley and oats ", according to Boris Boincean, director of the institution .
At the same time, for five years now, the Institute has been carrying out a comparative analysis of wheat varieties of local origin and those from neighboring regions, as well as from European countries. This showed that, in favorable years, some imported varieties have a high production potential, and in the dry ones, as they are often in our country, they significantly lose their productivity compared to the domestic ones, which offers a higher degree of stability. .
In order to increase the competitiveness of local agricultural products, the Institute recommends that farmers comply with the technological requirements of cultivation and reduce production costs. This is possible by reducing or rationally using fertilizers, pesticides, plowing, irrigation, as well as by purchasing local seed material, which is marketed at much lower prices than imported.
During its almost 80 years of existence, Institute has created over 370 varieties and hybrids of different crops - wheat and barley in autumn and spring, alfalfa, sunflower, soybeans, beans, peas, peas, beets of sugar.
