VIDEO // EcoContact public association of Moldova launches environmental conflict mediation guide after series of practical sessions in Chisinau, Cahul

Moldova is taking important steps towards implementing modern mechanisms for resolving environmental disputes by strengthening the role of mediation. During  February-March 2026, more than 80 mediators, lawyers and representatives of public authorities participated in a string of specialized training sessions aimed at laying the foundations for functional “green justice” in local communities.

The activities were coordinated by the civil society organization, EcoContact, in partnership with the Mediation and Legal Studies Academy, as part of a strategic project financially supported by Sweden.

Mediation as an alternative to environmental litigation

The training sessions held in the cities of Chisinau and Cahul focused on practically testing the new Environmental Conflict Mediation Guide. The main goal was to develop participants’ practical skills in managing complex conflicts that often arise between economic operators, local communities and authorities.

The innovative element of the programme consisted in simulating real cases through role-playing. Participants went through the entire mediation procedure, from identifying the problem to finding amicable solutions, applying specific intervention techniques, according to EcoContact.

Analysis of practical cases: from animal farms to protected areas

A major point of interest was the presentation of concrete cases managed by EcoContact, which served as a basis for understanding the typology of environmental conflicts:

Impact of livestock activities: Conflicts generated by odour, poor management of manure and pollution of nearby water bodies from animal farms.

Industrial development: Challenges related to the construction of slaughterhouses near settlements or in the vicinity of protected natural areas.

Human rights: Sessions dedicated to the fundamental right to a healthy environment, access to environmental information and public participation in decision-making.

A functional mechanism for sustainable communities

Following this consultative and training process, the Environmental Conflict Mediation Guide will be officially published and disseminated. This educational resource will provide a comprehensive legal and technical framework for professionals who will intervene in mediating disputes related to the protection of water resources, forests or air quality, the cited source says.

The integration of mediation in the environmental field represents a significant advantage for the Moldovan society, reducing pressure on the judicial system and offering communities a faster and less costly way to protect their environmental rights. The #GreenJustice project thus continues to strengthen environmental governance in Moldova, contributing to the creation of a social climate based on dialogue and sustainability.
