Parliament speakers of Baltic States: “Moldova’s EU accession important for Europe’s common security and future”
Implementing reforms and consolidating a strong society are essential to accelerating the European integration process of Moldova. The speakers of the parliaments of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania have made statements to this effect, while also emphasizing that the country’s accession is important for common security and the future of Europe.
Speaker of the Seimas of Lithuania Juozas Olekas praised the progress made by Moldova and Ukraine in implementing reforms.
“Moldova and Ukraine are implementing reforms very well. This is a very important incentive for the European Union to recognize these countries’ ambitions to become members of the European Union. Of course, there are many positions in different countries. We will continue to persuade our partners in the European Union to recognize these achievements. I believe it is necessary first to complete the implementation of reforms and to negotiate on the EU acquis. Together, we can achieve these results,” said the speaker of Lithuania’s Seimas.
For his part, Speaker of the Riigikogu of Estonia Lauri Hussar highlighted the role of accession criteria in developing a strong society.
“I am sure that the negotiations by chapters will be opened and that they will be very fruitful. I encourage you to focus on implementing reforms because, on the one hand, enlargement depends on a political decision, and on the other hand, the criteria must be met by each country that wants to join. Thus, it is not up to the European Union to ensure that these criteria are fulfilled, but up to the candidate countries. Meeting the criteria helps you develop your country, build a strong society and they are precisely the tools that support you in continuing the reforms you have started,” said Speaker of the Riigikogu of Estonia Lauri Hussar.
Speaker of the Saeima of Latvia Daiga Mieriņa underlined that Moldova’s accession to the European Union was vital both for the country’s future and for Europe’s security.
“You must become members of the European Union as soon as possible, because here we are talking about our common security, about the future of Europe. Until now, the European Union has been able to find compromises through negotiations to achieve the result it was seeking. We see how much you have already invested; we talk with our partners in Europe to convince them that we must open negotiations as soon as possible,” specified Speaker of the Saeima of Latvia Daiga Mieriņa.
The speakers of the parliaments of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are paying an official visit to Moldova on February 2-4, 2026, at an invitation of Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu. The visit’s agenda includes meetings with high-ranking state officials, including President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, participation in a solemn meeting of the parliament and field visits, including to Calarasi and to the Business Incubator, a project supported by the European Union.
